In an earlier blog post I set up a poll to find out what famous French cheeses people liked the most. I asked them to choose from 5 of the most popular and they also had the option to add their own favourite. The results are in and here are the results.

These results don’t surprise me, Brie is a popular cheese in this country and although the other cheeses may be popular in France, they are not as well known here. This I think is why people also voted for a different cheese, a cheese of their choice.

The Louvre

One of the worlds most impresive museums, the Louvre contains more than 350,000 priceless objects.  It was first built as a fortress by King Philippe-Auguste in 1190.  The first King to make it his home was Charles V (1364-80).

In the 16th century Francois I replaced it with a renaissance – style palace.  The royal art collection was first founded with twelve paintings looted from Italy.  The collection was opened to the public in 1793 and later Napoleon renovated the Louvre as a museum.

An impresive building the Louvre is well layed out.  The first foor consisting of fine works from early to mid 19th century oriental works and decorative arts plus a book shop.  The middle level contains symbolist paintings, sculpture terraces.  On the upper level there are post – impressionist galleries which contain the collections most popular world wide.

At the main entrance you can collect a map of the layout.  Escalators lead to all three floors which is housed beneath a pyrimid of glass.  The Louvre  can also be accessed through the Carrousel du Louvre shopping mail at 99 rue de Rivoli which is also worth a visit.

The Arc de Triomphe

The Construction of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris was ordered by Napoleon the French Emperor.  It was built in honour of the French army.  The names of 128 battles and the names  of the generals that took part in them are written on the white walls.

The 50 metre/164 foot tall Arc de Triumph crowns the West End of the Champs-Elysees, the city’s most famous avenue, at the junction known as the Etoile (star), where 12 prestigious avenues radiate out from the arch.

To get to the top, visitors must climb over 280 steps.  This can be a grueling climb,  so be prepared.   There is an elevator, for disabled visitors or those with strollers, there are a few remaining steps when you leave the elevator.

Once you have reached the top, you will see a sublime and unique view of Paris, a good vantage point ,  there is also a small museum which tells the history of its construction and gives details of various celebrations and funerals that the Arch has seen over the years.
